Election Commissioners

Qualifications to be a Commissioner:

  • Must be a qualified voter in Rapides Parish not entitled to assistance in voting.
  • Must not be a candidate for election to public office or be a member of the immediate family of a candidate for public office in the precinct you are to serve.
  • Must not have been convicted of an election offense.
  • Must successfully complete a course of instruction provided by the Clerk of Court.
  • Must provide the Clerk of Court with correct party affiliation.
  • Must not be a law enforcement officer.

The responsibilities of a Commissioner:

  • Complete a general course of instruction and attend any pre-election class required.
  • Working election day from 5:30 a.m. to approximately 8:30 p.m.
  • Setting up and operating the voting machines during the day.
  • Identifying voters, determining ballot selection and handling all election paperwork.
  • Enforcement of election laws.
  • Closing the machine and completing any paperwork that needs to be delieverd to the Clerk.

Certified commissioner pay:

  • $200.00 per election for commissioners.
  • $250.00 per election for commissioners-in-charge.
